AUDIOSLAVE Guitarist To Perform At Rally In Support Of Immigrant Workers' Rights
September 27, 2006AUDIOSLAVE guitarist Tom Morello will be performing in Los Angeles on Thursday, September 28 at a rally in support of immigrant workers' rights. Thousands will march and 400 immigrant workers, religious leaders, community members and students will shut down Century Blvd. near Los Angeles International Airport, risking arrest in the largest nonviolent civil disobedience in Los Angeles. The rally, which is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m., will take place at Century Blvd. and Vicksburg adjacent to the Radisson LAX.
Background: On September 28, hundreds will risk arrest in the largest act of nonviolent civil disobedience on record in the history of Los Angeles. The march and civil disobedience will shut down Century Blvd. during rush-hour traffic near Los Angeles International Airport, an area with over a dozen hotels that employ thousands of immigrant workers. Participants will conduct a sit-in on Century Blvd. and will demand an end to the exploitation of immigrant workers, with a focus on the hotel industry. Most of the hotel workers on Century Blvd. are immigrants, and earn 20% less than hotel workers in Los Angeles County as a whole. Many of these workers live in the surrounding communities of Lennox, Hawthorne and Inglewood where 1 in 4 residents live below the poverty line and 40% of children come from poor households.
